Atlanta’s Spaghetti Junction is one of the most notorious and congested intersections in the country.

Recently, WSB-TV noted Spaghetti Junction, the intersection of Interstates 285 and 85 North, again topped an annual list of traffic congestion hot spots published by the American Transportation Research Institute.

The institute has been analyzing trucking congestion hotspots at 300 locations across the United States since 2002.

The trucking industry group branded “Spaghetti Junction” as the slowest interchange in the country. Atlanta also has the unenviable reputation as having the fourth slowest traffic interchange in the nation, the I-75 at I-285 North in Atlanta.

WSB-TV noted an $11 billion highway overhaul in Georgia will rebuild ramps and interchanges and add express lanes to improve the congested intersection.

Accidents with injuries are common on Spaghetti Junction. A multi-vehicle accident with injuries was reported in September 2018.

Intersections like Spaghetti Junction are dangerous because they are so complicated and often involve multiple lane changes. Drivers become confused and may swerve across lanes or make sudden lane changes because they fear they will miss their exits.

Changing lanes is one of the most dangerous maneuvers drivers make on the highways of Georgia. These dangers are multiplied on an interchange like Spaghetti Junction. The many interconnecting and overlapping on and off-ramps make collisions more prevalent and can lead to massive injuries and deaths.

Lane changes can cause sideswipe accidents. They can also push cars, trucks, and buses off the road into ditches and off overpasses and cause rollover accidents.

If you are involved in an accident on a busy interstate around Atlanta, it’s vital to call the police and get to a safe place. Many people involved in accidents have been hit while they are in or beside the road.
