Peachtree City Man is Sentenced for the Death of Couple from Coweta County
Red light runners cause terrible accidents on the highways of Georgia. We were saddened to read about a wreck last year at an intersection. It caused the death of a couple from Coweta County.
Recently, Andrew John Wiemann, 29, of Peachtree City, was sentenced to five years in prison for the crash. He admitted two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
This was a tragic case involving a couple who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Georgia State Patrol stated a black Infiniti went through a red light on Ga. 54 and Fischer Crossing Boulevard in Sharpsburg in the summer of 2017. It crashed into the couple’s Ford Escape.
According to media reports, 57-year-old Thomas Scott Mayo, and Pamela Mayo, 58, were going out to NCG Cinemas at the time of the wreck. Georgia State Patrol said they were pronounced dead on the scene, the GSP reported.
The tragic death of the couple from Coweta County caused by a red light runner raised more concerns about drivers not obeying lights as well as the intersection where the crash took place.
Eyewitness Timberli Williams who was working at the movie theater at the time of the crash told a TV station she almost died at the intersection when riding with her father three years earlier. They called for officials to change the speed limit in the area from 55 mph to 45 mph and to add a turn signal for the movie theater, Channel 2 reported.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is looking at the accident tally at the light on Ga. 54 and Fischer Crossing Boulevard in Sharpsburg.
Georgia has clear rules on red lights. Motorists must stop at a red light whether it’s solid or flashing before they enter an intersection.
Georgia law allows drivers to make a right turn on red if they come to a full stop first, as long as there is no sign prohibiting it. Drivers must use caution and make sure no vehicles are approaching before making a right on red.
A motorist can only perform a left turn after stopping at a red light on a one-way street when going onto another one-way street. In Georgia, it’s not illegal to enter an intersection on a yellow light. However, you should exercise care. This indicates the light is about to turn red.
