Most communities in Georgia have a fear of violent crime. However, some are more dangerous than others. Recently, a survey on the website Roadsnacks listed the most dangerous cities in Georgia and there were some surprises.
Union City headed the danger list. Union City is in Fulton County. It has a population of around 20,000 people.
Union City also made a list of the most dangerous places in America, according to home security consultant website SafeWise. However, it was not listed as the most dangerous place in the state in that survey.
College Park made the fifth place in the national survey with East Point being named ninth. Douglas was the 13th most dangerous city in the country in that survey while Union City was listed as 17th most dangerous. The other two cities in Georgia that made the list were Americus at 20 and Brunswick at 23.
The Roadsnacks survey was released in 2018. It stated Union City saw a rise in violent crimes and property offenses over the past three years. The city saw 1,210 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 10,529 property crimes per 100,000 people.
College Park also featured in the new survey. The city took the top spot for both violent crimes per capita as well as property crimes in 2017 but was in the second spot in 2018. College Park is located south of Atlanta. The survey ranked Atlanta itself as the 14th most dangerous city in Georgia.
East Point was listed as the third most dangerous place in Georgia. The city lies to the southwest of Atlanta.
Residents of East Point have a 1 in 8.7 chance of becoming the victim of a crime although they are more likely to be victims of property crimes. The Roadsnacks survey stated residents of the most dangerous place in Virginia had about a 1 in 15 chance of being the victim of a crime by way of comparison.
Waynesboro, the biggest city in Burke County, was the fourth most dangerous city in Georgia. It experienced a large spike in violent crime between 2014-16.
Residents of Waynesboro face a 1 in 12.8 chance of becoming the victim of theft or arson— the 7th highest rate in Georgia.
