Invokana is a diabetes drug marketed by Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceutical’s subsidiary. The family of a diabetic who took the drug claims diabetes drug complications led to his death.
A wrongful death lawsuit filed this year in the U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey states Raymond Jack, Sr., from Georgia was prescribed Invokana in the spring of 2015.
A few months after the diagnosis, he suffered an acute stroke and was hospitalized in the summer of 2015. He was later diagnosed with acute kidney injury, diabetic ketoacidosis stroke and acute renal insufficiency.
Jack was again treated at a hospital in September 2015. This time he was diagnosed with renal insufficiency, acute toxic metabolic encephalopathy, acute stroke, dehydration, acute kidney injury, and hypokalemia.
Diabetes Drug Complications Result in Wrongful Death Lawsuit
The patient was hospitalized for a third time in October 2015 when he was told he had an acute kidney injury, urinary tract infection and chronic kidney disease Stage III.
These are extremely serious conditions. Jack’s health continued to go downhill due to his complications, leading to his death in November 2015, less than a year after he was first prescribed Invokana
The complaint claims diabetes drug complications led to Jack’s death. The lawsuit said his multiple illnesses and subsequent death were a foreseeable consequence of his treatment with Invokana.
The lawsuit also claimed that Johnson & Johnson and Janssen knew that Invokana could cause potentially life-threatening conditions and complications, but failed to give doctors and patients adequate warnings about the risks from the drug.
The wrongful death lawsuit is not an isolated incidence. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against the makers of Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitor drugs.
The plaintiffs claim a wide range of injuries including kidney damage and other cardiovascular issues.
As of October 16, 2017, more than 740 cases have been filed against the drugmakers, reports DrugWatch.
