Tennis Player Venus Williams is Accused in Car Crash that Kills 78-year-old Pedestrian
Tennis player Venus Williams is the subject of a wrongful death lawsuit after she was involved in a crash in Florida that killed an elderly passenger.
Police said Williams was at fault in a wreck that caused injuries to a 78-year-old man who later died.
Palm Beach Gardens Police said in a report the accident occurred on June 9 in Palm Beach Gardens.
Jerome Barson, who lost his life after the wreck, was a passenger in a car that was driven by his wife, Linda Barson.
The family of Barson since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Williams, alleging negligence.
A report on CNN said the impact of the accident caused damage to both vehicles. The Hyundai Accent Williams reportedly sustained severe crush damage. Williams’ 2010 Toyota Sequoia was also reported to be severely damaged, the suit said.
The police report into the accident stated Linda Barson told police she was traveling west in the right lane. She approaching an intersection and slowed down for a traffic light. The report said she drove through the intersection when the light turned to green. Barson claimed Williams’ 2010 Toyota Sequoia cut across in front of her car.
Barson said she was unable to brake in time to avoid hitting Williams’ car.
The lawsuit listed Jerome Barson’s injuries to include “severed main arteries, massive internal bleeding, a fractured spine, and massive internal organ damage.”
He died later in the ICU unit of a local hospital.
Linda Barson suffered injuries including a shattered right arm and a cracked sternum. She also fractured her right wrist, hand and several fingers.
The lawsuit claims Williams was at-fault for violating the right of way law.
Recently, attorneys acting for the deceased’s family filed a motion to search the tennis player’s cell phone records.
The request was made to get a better idea about what she may have been doing before the crash occurred, reported ABC news.
