Immigration QuestionsU.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs) are eligible to sponsor their spouses for U.S. permanent residence (i.e. green cards).  To do so, the U.S. citizen or LPR files an I-130 Petition for Immigrant Relative with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  This petition must contain proof of the U.S. citizen or LPR’s status in the U.S., proof that the couple is lawfully married, and proof that the couple’s marriage is genuine and bona fide – meaning proof that the couple did not marry for the purposes of gaining immigration benefits.

Once the USCIS officer reviews the I-130 Petition, often the officer schedules the couple to come to an interview where the officer can ask the couple questions about their married life together in order to confirm the bona fide nature of the marriage.  The officer will specifically address each question to either the U.S. citizen/LPR, the immigrant spouse, or to the couple jointly.  Additionally, the officer may conduct one interview with both people present, or may elect to conduct two separate interviews.

Although every marriage-based immigration interview is different, the following is a list of the questions that our clients are most frequently asked during their interviews.
